and so, the last company of the whole trip is Southern Software Park. it is actually part of the government body and its focus is on technology as seen in the company's name 'software park'. ZhuHai is well-known for its technology and they have to keep up with that reputation of theirs. hence, the schools around the park steer their curriculum more towards the IT. their purpose of doing so is to instill the knowledge of IT in the students, hoping to produce an elite batch of It students. They have gained much support from the government and it helped them quite abit. with that, it marks the end of our company visits for the whole learning journey. :)

Day 8 is off to Sunten Electronics. Sunten Electronics is a up-scale company that produces electronics such as transformer, reactor, sub-station, switch gear etc. apparently, many industries uses its products such as airport, dam generators, train stations etc. we learn that despite it being an important up-scale company in the economy, there are many challenges that needed to be overcome as well. one of which is the increasing cost of copper and steel as well as competitors that are emerging in the market. The CEO of the company also told us that they actually have plans to join-venture with a french company to help overcome the many challenges they are facing currently. out of all the companies we visited, this is probably the only company that has plans to join-venture.

i feel that the company's move to join-venture is a decision that is a very respectable one. this is so because they are not afraid of the many changes that will occur in the company. with joint-venture, they will have lesser control and lesser say in the company. this shows that they are actually focusing more on the positive impacts which is very brave and admirable.

later in the day, we went to National Torch High-Tech Industrial Development Zone. this company is very much like the very first company we visited in HK. they provide more of a service to the local/overseas companies rather than having the aim of being a normal profitable company. their purpose is to try to attract foreign companies to set-up their companies there. another role of theirs is to draw up plans and locate the different companies at different parts of ZhongShan to prevent harming factors like pollution. they are the ones that determines the location of the companies in ZhongShan.

i guess i did not mention in the previous post about the drastic weather change in China. the first 2 days was still alright and manageable but the weather decided to change and dip to a freezing temperature from the 3rd day onwards. nobody was expecting that and we did not bring enough clothings. hence, many of us were down and fell ill. we could not run away from the fever and flu bug. me included.

anyhow, we went to China International Furniture Fair on the 7th day. it is a trade fair, just like those that we have in Singapore. but before we entered, we had to wait outside in the freezing cold weather for our pass to enter. it was quite a long wait and you can see teeth chattering during the llloonngg wait. when we stepped in, the impression that i have is very similar as to that of our local Suntec City Convention Centre and Expo Convention Halls. the place is huge and many companies displayed their furniture strategically, catching the attention of all the potential buyers/clients. i went there and cant help but observe how each company try different methods to catch the attention of the people, be it their attractive signs/logos, or the display of their furniture and the way they design their booth.

The super cool exterior of the convention centre

one of the outstanding designs in the trade fair that caught my eye
later in the day, we went to Yong Xiang furniture company. it was a very 'furniture day' for us. we were really very surprised at how low the cost is to produce sofas. this company custom-make sofas. we could pass the design that we desire to them, and they will produce it for you. few of the teachers were even harbouring the thought of exporting it to Singapore and be a supplier in Singapore to sell these sofas. what caught my attention during the visit is their marketing strategy. in fact, they dont spend much effort promoting their products. the only few marketing efforts done is through the web and participating in trade fairs. which was pretty amazing because they still get the business that they need despite little marketing efforts. their sofas were really pretty and cheap that we started to joke about buying 1 set each and shipping it back. if we could, i guess we would. :)

final product!
yup! it's us again. testing the sofas :)

We were brought to a piano factory in GuangZhou and apparently, it is one of the largest piano producers. we were brought around the whole factory to observe the entire piano-making process. from the cutting of the wood, to the assembling, to the packaging and exporting. making a piano is totally not easy at all. it is very time-consuming such that the factory only produce about 6000 pianos each month. though the raw materials is cheap, the time spent on making the whole piano is very expensive. this probably explains the high pricing of 30,000RMB - 300,000 RMB per piano.

the visit there made us realise that there are actually quite a few musical talents amongst our midst! we had special performances done by Zhe Ying, Stephanie and Pei Xuan. it was really enjoyable and it made me regret not wanting to learn piano when i was younger :(

One of the key parts that make up the entire piano..

some of the pretty pianos they produce.. love it
A strong statement that displays the company's mission
Our musically talented pianist - Zhe Ying!
Yup! it's us again :)
then, we are off to a university in GuangZhou. i was totally dumb-founded when i first arrived. in my mind, the impression i have of a university is one that looks like NUS with a big campus and many facilities. but when i stepped into the university, what i saw was a run down building with a very rugged feeling. there were little or no facilities in the campus and the toilet experience was rather terrifying. if one is not careful, the toilet bowl water will splash on your feet when you flush it. it was then that i felt how blessed and fortunate we are in Singapore. we even have lifts which we complain about. but the people there have to walk up the stairs everyday. also, we have nice toilets and good sanitisation but we still complain. it makes me feel rather spoilt and ashamed because we never seem to be satisfied at anything.

anyhow, we had a llllloooooonnnnggg and mundane presentation done by the school's professor. his effort was greatly seen in the powerpoint slides. but i guess their teaching styles are totally different from Singapore's and we got rather restless after looking at the slides filled with words. it actually scared us to a certain extent. ha. but it was still a great day spent in GuangZhou. :)

the torturous slides that Singapore lecturers should never follow..
A typical classroom setting.. totally different from Singapore
